Many people have asked why we went to Brazil. It was random but we are glad and enjoyed our time there so much! Over a year ago, I entered a contest Air Canada had online. I saw the contest a few times but wondered if it was even worth it. Then one day went thru the steps of telling what I love about travelling, uploaded a photo from a trip to Africa and it asked you to select anywhere in the world that you would want to travel. I had never been to South America so thought Brazil sounded good and São Paulo popped up as an option. A bit later an email came with instructions for the next step that needed to be completed in 3 days and a code at the end for free airfare for one from Regina – São Paulo return. Kent’s first response was “have a nice time!” but I’m glad he was up for an adventure and my parents as well!! So it ended up with a trip that cost a lot more than what my free airfare saved but we definitely had an amazing first trip to South America!
We ended up going straight from the São Paulo airport to the bus station and headed up to Rio de Janeiro to our wonderful hotel just half a block off of Copacabana Beach. We had a couple rainy days walking on the tiled sidewalks all over Copacabana then hot, sunny days to enjoy the magnificent views from Sugar Loaf Mountain and Corcovado Mountain where the Christ the Redeemer statue is. Being connected to a couple and their daughter who has studied English and spending a day together across the harbour at Niteroi was a highlight and very special! Crossing back to Rio by ferry at sunset we had a wonderful day. We could have easily spent more time in Rio, it is a beautiful, scenic city with plenty to explore and the beaches just like they are known for are some of the finest!!
