Lena

I love when my clients are willing to brave the elements of the prairie seasons!  Lena asked me just after she had her second son for a winter, snowy session.  We had to push back this shoot a couple times so we definitely lucked out when we met up last week.  Even a few hours later the landscape really changed as winter has melted away very quickly!  These warm, sunny spring days have been lovely!!

Enjoy your photos Lena, you look fantastic at just 2 months past baby’s arrival!  It was not only a treat for you to have these photos taken, it is always wonderful to spend time with a beautiful, kind hearted lady like you!

Wppi 2015 | Las Vegas, Nevada

WPPI has proven in previous years to be a great place to gain knowledge, inspiration, learn new techniques, business practises and see new products.  Being the largest photography conference and represented internationally, it’s bound to be great!  The days were filled attending classes, walking the massive tradeshow and listening to presenters – Richard Photo Lab is awesome for bringing in some of my favourite film photographers to share at their booth.

It’s really interesting listening to each speaker and hearing what works well for them and their success and it’s different for each one.  Remembering our art and businesses are very individual as we all have different strengths, weaknesses, interests and values.  There is so much information to absorb, process and then pull into my photography + business the parts that will work well and are a good fit for me.

Thank you CPS USA for taking care of this Canadian member!  I always appreciate a perk of their program to have a camera and a lens professionally cleaned + checked while at the conference.

The keynote presentation by world-renowned photographer, Joe McNally, was exceptional!!  He has a great sense of humor and having been on assignment for National Geographic, TIME, The New York Times, etc around the globe it was a captivating presentation!

Here’s a few photos shared on Instagram while we were away…

These busy, fast-paced days were most enjoyable being there with Melissa and Brandi, the creative duo of P&S Weddings.  It’s great having others to recap what we heard, bounce ideas off one another and hold one another accountable, and of course continue to be each other’s encouragers!  Once again they made it a memorable trip to WPPI!!  We had some fun in the photo booths too!

Something new for us this year was to sit in on the live print judging which was really interesting to hear the judge’s constructive feedback on the submissions and post their scores.  WPPI comes at a great time of the year and I always come home with helpful information, fresh ideas, a to-do list and reinforced ambition!

Sri Lanka | Yala National Park, Mirissa Beach

When researching for our trip I really had my heart set on a jeep safari in Yala National Park.  There is something really special and amazing to see wild animals in their natural habitat.  We saw many interesting birds, lots of water buffalo and spotted deer, elephants, mongoose, land monitors, monkeys, wild boars and the highlight was a leopard sleeping in a tree then getting up to stretch and moving across to another tree.

Sri Lanka was majorly impacted with devastation by the 2004 tsunami, there were many lives taken here at the Yala beach.  It was incredible to hear the animals went to higher ground and were safe.

Sri Lanka | Kandy, Hill Country, Tea Estates

We headed off from Colombo on the early morning train to Kandy.  Off to the beautiful, lush hill country!  The scenery was gorgeous!  A breath of fresh air in more ways than one.  It was amazing to see all the tea fields, plantations and vegetable gardens in the red soil.  Even at the highest point we got up to of 6560 feet.  The views were stunning as we winded along the highways.  Part of it we travelled in a tuktuk.  3 of us, with our bags, I thought it was a crazy idea but it turned out to be a lot of fun and we could see the scenery really well from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya.  There were some waterfalls along the road and others plummeting at a distance.  We saw how quickly the waterways fill up getting caught in a major downpour – thankfully we were travelling in a van by then!

The air temperature changed drastically when we reached Nuwara Eliya, we only spent a few hours before heading on to Balangoda to visit special friends.

Sri Lanka is one of the highest tea producing and exporting countries in the world.  It was neat to see huge tea estates, tea pickers out in the fields and we toured a couple tea factories.  Seeing the whole process from wilting, rolling, drying, sifting, color separating to bagging.

Once again there was beautiful scenery travelling to Kataragama, near the gates of Yala National Park.  Less traffic, no longer English on many signs and rice paddies when we were out of the hill country.

I have one more blog post to come next week of our travels in Sri Lanka!

Melissa - These are incrediblel! I feel like I’m getting such an education!

Sri Lanka | Colombo and the Southcoast

I thought I could narrow it down to share my favorites in a single post but we packed a lot into our time in Sri Lanka so there will be another to come.  This beautiful, interesting country is a relatively small but quite densely populated island southeast of India.  When you think about it being 1/10th the size of Saskatchewan with 23,000,000 people that is so different than we are used to in our spacious country!  You can imagine the bumper to bumper traffic in the cities!  It shows their wonderful and friendly personalities as they are very considerate, patient drivers.  There is a lot of natural beauty and diverse landscapes from the pristine coastline to the lush hill country and national parks.  There is Indian influence as well as Portuguese, Dutch and English from time spent under those country’s control.  As they say it is an island of magical proportions, the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, it has much to entice and captivate!!

We spent this first part of our trip travelling with my parents and an uncle so we were in good company and it’s fun to share these memories with them!

We started off in Colombo after 30 hours of travel at an elegant, historic hotel that is seafront.  The Galle Face Hotel was built in 1864 and is a beautiful colonial hotel.  It’s in a great location to walk along the Galle Face Greens and explore the city.

Then we headed off south on the expressway past rice paddies, cinnamon plantations and tea estates to the south coast of the island to explore Galle and we stayed at Unawatuna Beach.

In all our travels we have not seen as many seemingly stray dogs as there were here.

We spent an afternoon walking around the Galle Fort, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the old city within these stone walls.  Many of the buildings have been converted into shops, cafes, hotels and museums.  It’s a very interesting area.

Many restaurants along the coast have a fish + seafood market that you choose which fish you want, pay by weight and then they barbecue it.

On our way back towards Colombo we stayed a nite at Bentota.  It was a cloudy afternoon to be at the beach but it has a long stretch of beautiful sandy beach.  Then we hired a boat and went on a river safari which we were all really glad we did.  It was neat to see life along the river’s edge, we went thru a mangrove forest and when heading back enjoyed the stunning sunset – and watched as bats circled overhead!
