We had a really wonderful vacation in Puerto Rico. Time away, celebrating our 5 year anniversary and exploring a new place. With Hurricane Sandy about to hit we were very grateful to make it thru Newark, just a day before they shut down the airport . We easily could have spent longer and there was a lot we didn’t have time to see on the main island of Puerto Rico. It was great to go before the busyness of tourist season and the weather was amazing. If you like heat!
There is nothing like stepping out of the airport into the hot, tropical air. We couldn’t wait to get our toes in the sand and hear the waves crashing on the shore. Old San Juan city is really neat. A walled city with colorful buildings and blue cobblestone streets.
Following the advice of my cousin we spent half of our time on the stunning, quiet island of Vieques and exploring every bit of it we could. Everyday as we meandered the very narrow paved roads we discovered something new + interesting on this small island. We stayed in the cutest cabanita. Ate our meals outdoors and picnic lunches on the beach. Most often had a beach to ourselves. Enjoyed the underwater world with a snorkel, mask and fins. Went to the best restaurant on the island for an amazing 4 course dinner on our anniversary. A highlight of the trip was kayaking in the bio-bay leaving a trail of light as we moved thru the darkness. It is incredibly fascinating.
All over the island horses just freely roam
Playa Negra – Black Sand Beach
We ended our vacation with a few days on the eastern side of Puerto Rico by the rainforest
We loved spending a morning in El Yunque rainforest and our visit was complete with a tropical downpour on our hike!
