Ice carvers. Artists with ice.
“Enjoy Lake Louise during the Ice Magic Festival weekend January 22 -24, 2010. In the shadow of glacier clad Mt. Victoria witness teams of professional carvers as they compete in the prestigious International Ice Carving Competition held each year at The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.
Sanctioned by the National Ice Carving Association (NICA), twelve international teams of two carvers work within the theme “Podium Bound – Spirit of the Competition”. Teams are given 15 blocks of ice, weighing 300lb each, which they must transform into seven-foot tall world class ice sculptures in just three days. The Lake Louise Inn will also host the One Carver One Hour One Block event, an individual carver speed event. Chainsaws will fly as carver’s race against the clock to carve one block of ice in one hour.”
It was a frosty, cold afternoon but it was neat to watch the carvers in action, to see their creations evolving from blocks of ice! The carvings are left until Mother Nature takes them away…check them out if you have time! We also saw more carvings at Lake Louise ski resort this past weekend.
